Educational Ministry and Pastoral Theology and Care

Tina Newberry
The Reverend Tina Newberry will join us this fall to offer Educational Ministry. The Reverend Newberry is currently an instructor in writing and a learning specialist for the St. Louis Community College system. She brings depth of experience in serving as a Christian Educator and a professor of Christian Education within the Cooperative Baptist tradition. In addition, she has been a curriculum writer of published resources in educational ministry. Over the past few years she has served as a resource person for Eden students who have requested additional instruction in reading and navigating learning challenges.

Gene Fowler
The Reverend Dr. Gene Fowler will join us this fall to offer Pastoral Theology and Care. Dr. Fowler is currently pastor of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church (PCUSA). With an M.Div. and a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology and Care from Princeton Theological Seminary, Dr. Fowler bears experience in teaching at Memphis Theological Seminary, in publishing books and articles within the field of Pastoral Care, and in local congregational ministry. One of his recent books is entitled Caring Through the Funeral: A Pastor’s Guide (Chalice Press, 2004).

Congregational Studies and African American Church Studies

Timothy Tyler
The Reverend Dr. Timothy Tyler is Senior Pastor of Wayman AME Church in St Louis, MO where he as served since 2001. He has taught at Claremont Graduate School of Theology. In addition he serves as the Dean of Instruction for the Fifth Episcopal District of the AME, overseeing the theological educational development of leaders within the denomination. He holds an M.Div. from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA and a D.Min. from United Theological Seminary in Dayton Ohio.

Donald McNeal
The Reverend Dr. Donald McNeal is Senior Pastor of Hopewell Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO where he has served since 2003. In addition to extensive experience within congregational ministry, Dr. McNeal has taught within the context of legal education and has been an active leader within the local NAACP. Dr. McNeal holds an M.T.S. from Eden Theological Seminary, a J.D. from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and is anticipating completion of his D.Min. from Virginia Union University, The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology in spring 2008.

Missionaries and Ministers In Residence
Eden has the good fortune of hosting several scholars, missionaries and ministers in residence for the fall of 2007. A goodly number of these visitors have agreed to teach while they are present with us.

Elmer Lavastida and Gisella Perez
UPDATE: The Reverend Drs. Elmer Lavastida and Gisella Perez, who were to be scholars in residence at Eden, were denied visas by the U.S. State Department.

Jeff Moore
The Reverend Dr. Jeff Moore is a missionary for with Global Ministries who has been located in South Africa. He has been particularly involved in working with people living with HIV and AIDS, and leading the church in its response to HIV/AIDS. Dr. Moore and his family will live on the Eden campus while they are in the U.S. for the fall. With an M.Div.and a D.Min. from Eden Theological Seminary, Dr. Moore is currently completing his Ph.D. dissertation with Gerald West at the University of Natal in South Africa.

Kim Henning
The Reverend Kim Henning of Grace Congregational UCC in Two Rivers, WI will be our minister in residence for the fall of 2007. Kim intends to be fully engaged in the academic, worship, and common life of the seminary. He will offer support to students in their discernment of vocation, be engaged in ministry seminar facilitation, as well as supervision, and be a pastoral presence within and for the Eden community.

United Methodist Courses
In order to meet the needs of UMC students to attain their requirements in UMC courses, Eden has asked The Reverend Dr. Carl Schenck to teach United Methodist History in a two hour/once a week slot. Dr. Schenck is the head of staff at Manchester United Methodist Church. He holds an M.Div. And a D.Min. from the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City.

Returning Adjuncts
In addition to this wonderful new group of educators, next fall’s schedule will be graced by many of our returning adjunct faculty: The Reverend Dr. Martha Brunell, The Reverend Dr. Dieter Heinzl, The Reverend Dr. Warren Crews, Rabbi Howard Kaplansky and The Reverend Dr. Marilyn Stavenger.

Student Support
In addition to teaching responsibilities in the spring, The Reverend Dr. Marilyn Stavenger will be present with the Eden Faculty to offer support and advisement for students, to resource Orals evaluations and supervisory teams, and to offer advisement and support to Four Rivers at Eden.

Continuing Education
In addition to her teaching responsibilities for the 2007-08 academic year, The Reverend Dr. Martha Brunell will be serving part time as a Director of Continuing Education in relation to the Academic Dean’s office for the year. We are delighted to have Martha join us with her gifts and resources in this capacity and look forward to more of her time with us in the Eden Community.
