John teaches Old Testament and also some Studies in Ministry courses.John teaches the required introductory Old Testament class. He also regularly teaches several elective courses: Hebrew Grammar, a course on the books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and Old Testament Theology. He has published commentaries on the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations in the Westminister Bible Companion Series (John Knox/Westminister, 2000) and with Professor Tye, a book on teaching the Bible in the church (Chalice, 2003).
Having served as the pastor of two congregations, Professor Bracke is aware of the ways that pastors must use scripture in preaching and worship, teaching and pastoral care. This has led to his interest in interdisciplinary studies. He teams with Eden’s professor of Christian Education, Dr. Karen Tye, to lead a course and write a book on teaching the Bible in the church. John and Karen have also led workshops in church settings on this topic.
Dr. Bracke is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a former chairperson of the Executive Council of the United Church of Christ. John and his wife Mary, a church musician and Director of the Eden Seminary Bookstore, are parents of three grown children. Two Old English Sheepdogs help fill their empty nest.
