Dr. Ployd teaches the introductory Church History and Doctrine courses as well as United Methodist History and Doctrine and electives in early Christian thought.

Dr. Ployd approaches the study of history not simply as facts about the past, but as a resource for our current and future ministries and as a way to broaden our theological imaginations. He is committed to the idea of tradition, not as something that dictates what we have to do, but in the sense that our religious language is given to us by past generations.

“We are able to take a journey in our faith alongside those who have come before us and learn from them.”

Dr. Ployd is a commissioned Deacon and member of the West Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC). His teaching experience includes adjunct positions at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia and Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Focusing on the development of doctrine in the early church, particularly the thought of Augustine of Hippo, Dr. Ployd finds Augustine's blend of prayerful devotion and intellectual investigation to be a fruitful way to approach the theological life in general. “At every turn, Augustine reminds us that knowledge of God is not separate from love of God and love of neighbor.” Dr. Ployd's first book, Augustine, the Trinity, and the Church, will be published by Oxford University Press in 2015.

Dr. Ployd’s other interests include ancient rhetoric and theology, North African ecclesiology, and the history of scriptural interpretation.

Dr. Ployd is married to Rev. Diane Kenaston, an ordained elder in the West Virginia Annual Conference of the UMC and pastor of University UMC in University City, Missouri.
