Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Future Ministers

Eden Theological Seminary has received a grant from the Lilly Endowment to address the economic challenges facing future ministers. Through several special programs as well as careful examination of the cost of education, Eden has been focusing on the issue of student debt for some time now. Receipt of the Lilly Endowment grant allows Eden to further study the growing concern of student indebtedness, its impact on students, the seminary and the church, and to develop a plan to ultimately lower the rate of student borrowing.

The project has four objectives: set a ceiling of maximum student indebtedness, institute a series of strategic steps to lower student borrowing levels to this ceiling, establish mechanisms to monitor the effectiveness of these steps, and make the lowering of student borrowing an all-stakeholder priority.

Work on implementation of the grant has begun and recently a group of members of the seminary community were invited to participate in the first of two evaluation planning sessions. The goal of the first meeting was to develop an evaluation logic model. A subsequent meeting will focus on identifying key evaluation questions to determine what data is collected from students and alumni.
