LIFE/IFL offering: The Eden Gleaning Project

  • Day 1: Food Waste and Gleaning
    • Thursday, 6:30 am Central – 6:00 pm Central:
      • We will drive to farms in Vincennes Indiana. The program starts in Indiana at 11:00 Eastern. You may meet us in Vincennes or caravan from St. Louis
  • Day 2: Food Insecurity and Produce Distribution
    • Friday, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Central:
      • Meet at Eden for a discussion before taking produce to area food ministries.

The Eden Gleaning Project gleans thousands of pounds of produce that is distributed to food ministries in the St. Louis region. This IFL engages 2 days of synchronous learning as well as advance preparation and a final reflection: Day 1: (Vincennes, Indiana) glean potatoes and sweet corn in Vincennes Indiana, followed by a discussion on the biblical understanding of gleaning and modern-day forms of gleaning. Day 2: (St. Louis) Class includes a discussion about food deserts and food insecurities in the St. Louis region and a time to distribute the gleaned produce to the St. Louis area food ministries.

About our leaders:

Professor Kristen J. Leslie, Ph.D., Professor of Pastoral Theology and Care at Eden Seminary, is a feminist pastoral theologian whose research areas include sexualized violence, homelessness, and food insecurity. An ordained United Methodist minister, she has served as a parish pastor, a college chaplain, a pastoral counselor, a rape counselor and seminary professor. Dr. Leslie serves on the Core Committee for St Louis Winter Outreach and is the co-director of the Eden Gleaning and Garden Project.

Rev. Karen Pepmeier, Eden MDiv ’21, Hospital Chaplain and Co-Director of the Eden Gleaning and Garden Project. Rev. Pepmeier grew up on a farm in Knox County, Indiana where she experienced the generosity of the farming community, the love of her UCC church community, and the great amounts of food waste that happen.
