Eden Seminary has announced to students, faculty and staff requirements for vaccines and masks for the upcoming academic term.  Students already are registering for Hy-Flex classes, with the opportunity to participate in those classes either in physically or digitally present ways.  In addition,  all community members received the following notifications on August 7th.

Required Vaccine Verification for all Registered Students

As a part of Eden Seminary’s attention to public health and safety protocols related to the ongoing COVID19 Pandemic, we are requiring vaccine verification for all faculty, staff, and students for the 2021-22 academic year.  Since returning to the residential campus on July 6, faculty and staff have already verified their vaccine status.  This notice is to announce that all students are required to do the same.

Over the summer we announced Eden’s Staff and Faculty have created a “blended” environment for our community of learning and faith (our “fifth campus”!) in which students can elect (via Hyflex registration) to attend classrooms either digitally or physically. Hence, beginning August 27th, 2021 we welcome all students the option to be on campus for social events, lectures, programs, and classes or to attend online. This Hyflex option maintains as safe a campus environment as possible with greater and continued accessibility. For this reason, all students are required to send verification of their vaccination status via https://form.jotform.com/212174670581051 with a photograph of their vaccine record – prior to August 27, 2021.

Which vaccines are approved?
World Health Organization-authorized vaccines are acceptable;
Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson are included

Where is a vaccination location near me?
Vaccines.gov – Find COVID-19 vaccine locations near you

How can I self schedule if I’m in or near, St. Louis, MO?
COVID-19 – Affinia Healthcare

If for some reason your vaccination card is NOT complete by August 27th, please attend all events and classes virtually to help us maintain verified safe zones. Students can request accommodations for medical exemptions within Brightspace, the Office of Student Affairs/Accommodations.

Thank you for your cooperation to ensuring your own health and the health and well-being of members of the Eden Community.

With you in hope on behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration,

Rev. Sonja B. Williams, PhD.
Dean of the Seminary

Mask Requirement for all persons (vaccinated or not) in Public Indoor Areas
The Seminary has been closely monitoring recent developments and public health authorities’ announcements regarding the Delta Variant related surge in COVID 19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. We continued to be reassured that vaccines and measures such as wearing a mask and observing proper sanitation are powerful tools in helping people avoid infection and/or serious illness. For this reason, in addition to requiring vaccine verification for all members of the Eden community (faculty, staff, and students), the Seminary requires that masks be worn by all people (vaccinated or not) in public spaces (hallways, chapel, Luhr Reference Room, the Commons, and restrooms) in the Seminary buildings. For the Eden- Webster Emerson Library, please follow their online requirements.

The Seminary administration is continuing to follow the guidance of public health authorities and will make a determination in late August as to whether classrooms (with vaccine verified students and faculty) are considered safe enough not to require masking. This decision would be to facilitate full participation/communication between faculty and students physically present in classrooms with those students who are attending classes digitally. This decision will be made with the safety of students and faculty foremost in view.

With you in hope on behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration,

Rev. Sonja B. Williams, PhD.
Dean of the Seminary

The Walker Leadership Institute (WLI) is offering a program to help congregational and community leaders who want to develop a new program or enhance and focus an existing one.  The WLI is also a sponsoring partner for the Adese Fellows of the United Church of Christ and the Neighborhood Leadership Academy of the University of Missouri Extension.

Check them all out here. Get involved.

The 12-week Walker Rural & Small Town Fellows Cohort is an opportunity to identify, develop and launch a new work with one’s congregation and with the support of a group of cohort members. Using accelerated planning methods, including lean development and elements of design thinking, the process gives fellows a way to discover, design, and deliver a new offering to enhance ministry in their current setting.  So far, we have clergy from Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, New Mexico, and Florida. All sessions will be done on ZOOM. There is no cost for this program. For more information contact Walker Director, Steve Lawler [email protected]

The yearlong Adese Fellowship is a catalytic experience for emerging entrepreneurs who renew the Church’s mission to create a just world for all. The Adese (from the Amharic language meaning to renew, pronounced ah-deh-say) Fellowship is a year-long, ecumenical program that engages participants in self-discovery, theological reflection and business development as they create enterprises that help their communities follow the way of Jesus and live into God’s economy. This groundbreaking fellowship maximizes the business acumen and entrepreneurial capacity of participants to launch scaleable and sustainable ventures that counter systemic poverty. More information at.  https://tinyurl.com/adese2021 or contact program director, Melina Higbee [email protected]

The 10-week Neighborhood Leadership Academy connects resources at the University – Creating Whole Communities and University of Missouri Extension – with neighborhood leaders from across the state of Missouri to learn together through a virtual project-based curriculum, developing the skills and building the networks necessary to create healthy, vibrant and whole communities. Participants are actively involved in their neighborhoods and represent communities throughout Missouri. More than 300 neighborhood and organization leaders have participated in NLA, learning the skills and building the networks necessary to create whole communities. For more information go to http://cwc.umsl.edu/nla/ or contact director Claire Wolff at [email protected]

The deadlines for signing up for each program is August 15th.

Eden Seminary is in the midst of saying farewell and best wishes to Professor Ben Sanders, Assistant Professor of Theology and Ethics.  Dr. Sanders will be moving from Eden at the end of June to begin a new position with the City of Denver as their Race and Social Justice Learning and Development Specialist.   The Eden community is saddened by this news, yet celebrates this opportunity for Dr. Sanders and the family.

Professor Sanders has made myriad contributions to the Eden faculty and the Seminary in his six years on the faculty. He has taught the introductory and first level Social Ethics course in the curriculum (where students have been affirmed and challenged to grapple with their embedded theology).  He has enlivened the theological imaginations of faculty colleagues and students alike to the work of James Cone and Howard Thurman — deepening our understanding of Black Theology, the diversity and power of the Black Church, and its historical and theological traditions. Additionally, Professor Sanders has been an architect in the faculty of our emerging commitment to movement-based theologies of activism, solidarity, and social change.

While at Eden, Professor Sanders has shared his brilliant scholarship and teaching generously with Eden students in the classroom, and in the church and public square in many different forums. An excellent preacher, a compelling lecturer, a compassionate listener, Professor Sanders has mentored many and encouraged many more. The witness of his work and this new position is a harbinger of the kind of vocational resilience that Eden faculty seek to engender in our students — pursuing God’s redemptive purposes of social transformation in all kinds of forms — from congregations to city halls.

With appreciation for the great gifts and service Dr. Ben Sanders contributed to the Eden Community, we salute his achievements and his continued ministry in the public square.
